I purchased this product to use as an “illustration” / example for mythology classes that I teach–for young people as well as adults. An intriguing object always makes a lasting impression and adds excitement to any academic presentation. What better way to connect the Phoenix legends and influences in the humanities than with this jolly ambassador? This little fellow is the star of the show! :) He just begs to be held, examined, and discussed!
This phoenix puppet exceeds my expectations, and I was pleased with it from the moment I removed it from the box. With its beautiful wings stretched in honor of the rising sun and its fantastic flames flying, it proves to be more than a puppet, more than a toy, it is a metaphor–just like the mythical phoenix itself, celebrating life, rebirth, new beginnings, light, inner strength, individuality, good fortune, blessings, etc.
The product is soft and well-made. The red and gold colors are strikingly bold, attention-grabbing–definitely flame-like, especially the “plumage” on top of the bird’s head. Interestingly enough, the eyes of this puppet are gentle, soulful, and wise just as you would expect the benevolent, ancient “Bird of Marvel” to be. :) [It is a much more interesting product than the Fawkes Phoenix of the Harry Potter product line--which is chicken like and somewhat dull in comparison.]
My puppet came with an excellent description tag by Folkmanis that offered curious phoenix facts and myths, which added to the educational value of the product.
The only negative aspect of this product (which really isn’t so negative given the target audience) is the puppet’s hand pocket, which is small and tight–designed for tiny and small hand, not for large hands! hahahaha So, petite handed mums and children will probably be able to actually use the puppet as a puppet; big, big handed Dads and other folks beware! You might get three to four fingers in a best! Nevertheless, the puppet is designed in such away as to pass for a stuffed animal as the hand pocket is discretely placed between tail and feet. In fact, unless one just pointed the fact out, some people might not even notice that it is a puppet.
In the hands of young children, this phoenix would “spark” creative play, storytelling, and imagination. For those interested in mythology and fantasy, it makes a wonderful decoration and conversation piece. For educators and home-schoolers, the phoenix proves to be a unique learning tool that ignites interests and questions.
It seems like nearly all world cultures have some type of phoenix bird story. If you are uncertain about what a phoenix is or isn’t as it relates to classic mythology, folklore, and literature, please investigate the following sources and / or concepts:
Edith Nesbit’s The Phoenix and The Carpet
C.S. Lewis’ The Magician’s Nephew
“The Phoenix Bird” by Hans Christian Anderson
“The Phoenix and the Turtle” by William Shakespeare

“The Golden Bird” Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale
Jewish folklore and the Milcham bird

Wow! Folkmanis has really outdone themselves on this one! The Phoenix is a Eastern mythological figure. From the feathery plumage to the metallic wing tips, the Phoenix hand puppet is truely a work of art. Great for a collector or one LUCKY kid! The Phoenix is a firey pinkish color. At well over a foot tall, you will not be dissapointed with this one. To see a picture, go to the Folkmanis web site.
Would go well with “Pegasus” and “Griffin” (also from Folkmanis) for a mythological theme. For a “Chinese” theme, you could get “Phoenix”, “Blue Dragon” and “Panda”.
A bit pricey, but absolutely breathtaking.
