Giant: Any animal, plant, or thing, of extraordinary size or power; it's a fitting definition as it relates to giant stuffed toys – they are in fact, plush animal toys that are nothing if not extraordinary in size.
Toys have been a part of children's lives for more years than we can count. And, while they may be just a simple ball or a sophisticated electronic robot, the need to play is such a strong one, that even without something that is mass produced, children will come up with their own way to design a plaything right out of the environment they live in.
The word "toy" comes from the old English word meaning tool. What we know as the meaning of toys today – playthings for children – was not a common term until the 19th century. Before that time and into the earl 1800's, "toy" was used describe any number of things as they related to adults – from inexpensive baubles to handcrafted pieces of silver furniture.
Excavations of ruins in Egypt, have produced a number of ancient toys including painted wooden balls, pull toys, spinning tops made of wood, papyrus, or stone, and doll crafts made of wood, ivory, gold, clay, and bronze. There have even been wooden animals such as tigers and crocodiles that had movable parts like jaws, pulled from the ruins.
In Greek and Roman times, children also had many different types of toys to play with; the Greeks had spinning tops made of clay, balls, and animals and dolls with moving arms and legs made of terracotta. Babies even had rattles shaped like animals. The children of Rome had wooden toy hoops, spinning tops, drums, dolls, and wooden animals. Horses made of wood were also popular in these eras and that included models of the Trojan horse (a great wooden horse used for Greek soldiers to hide inside to as to defeat their enemy). There were also popular children's games such as knucklebones (game of jacks), naughts and crosses (tic tac toe) and blind man's bluff. The world's oldest board game is said to be The Royal Game of Ur – played more than 5000 years ago in Babylon. Kites were another toy that both young and old enjoyed; they were invented more than 3000 years ago by the Chinese who developed many variations of them.
It wasn't a giant leap from some of the first invented dolls and wooden animals, to what we know today as giant stuffed toys; it was only a matter of time before they would make their way into the toy market. Both children and adults alike have been enjoying giant stuffed toys for many years and will undoubtedly continue to do so in the years to come.
